Five-year-old Serenity Arrington was stabbed to death in Chicago’s East Garfield Park on the West Side on Saturday.
Chicago Sun-Times reports that the girl was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy ruled her death a homicide, saying she died of “multiple incised wounds to the neck.”
A female suspect, who approached the officers at the scene, was taken into custody, police said.
The suspect was later identified as Simone Austin, who is Serenity Arrington’s mother.
So far no motive was given for the murder.
Chicago is experiencing one of its worst weekends involving shootings and deaths, with at least 50 shootings reported over the weekend.
A statistics report from the Chicago Police Department shows that through Sept. 20, police have recorded a staggering 560 murders in 2020 compared to 374 murders during the same time in 2019, nearly a 50% increase.
7694 thefts and 6830 stolen motor vehicles make up the majority of Chicago’s crime report so far this year.
CBS Chicago also mentions that four people were killed Saturday: two in Austin on the West Side and two on the South Side.
Two were killed Sunday, and another died Friday night in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side. They were all males, the youngest being 17 years old and the oldest being 66.
Sylvester Washington said his granddaughter loved alphabet soup and watching movies with him, according to ABC7 News.
“Y’all would have loved her. Sweet little girl. Man. Granddaddy little girl,” he said.
Washington added: “It’s horrible, man. My own flesh-daughter did that. Man. Y’all don’t want to have this feeling. No, I can’t explain it.”
Fox News also mentioned that ‘Police have also launched a homicide investigation after the body of a woman with multiple stab wounds to her face and neck was retrieved Sunday morning from the Chicago River. That woman appeared to be in her mid-20s.’
A 15-year-old boy died after being shot Saturday evening in West Pullman on the Far South Side. The boy was shot in the head about 9:20 p.m. in the 11600 block of South Prairie Avenue, Chicago police said.
