Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American woman, was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison, and Myles Cosgrove on March 13, 2020. Three plainclothes LMPD officers entered her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, executing a no-knock search warrant.
Today, one officer will face criminal charges for actions he took the night of the deadly incident. Brett Hankinson was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment and bail was set at 15K. It is important to note, this has nothing to do with Breonna Taylor, these charges stem from stray bullets fired from Detective Hankinson’s firearm that went through the walls of Taylor’s apartment and into adjacent homes.
Last week, a record settlement was reached for the family of Breonna Taylor. 12M will go to the family. The city of Louisville also agreed to adopt new measures in policing standards to ensure something like what happened to Breonna Taylor does not happen again.
