What do you get when you have 22 shooting incidents + 28 people shot, including a six-year-old, over a three-day period? Well if you’re in New York City, it’s called a “peaceful weekend” according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The shootings occurred over the three day Labor Day weekend in New York. City.
“Overwhelmingly, we had a peaceful weekend in central Brooklyn and it really is because of the hard work of everyone.”New York Mayor Bill De Blasio.
For the month of August 2020, there was a 166% increase in the number of shooting incidents across the city (242 v. 91) as the number of shootings rose in all boroughs except Staten Island.
De Blasio added, “We had one incident and it is a very troubling incident where one individual shot five people in Crown Heights in the early morning hours Monday. One of those people was a 6-year-old boy. And that’s deeply troubling,” he said.
Commissioner Dermot Shea mentioned in a news interview In an interview with Pat Kiernan of Spectrum News NY1 that at least 160 gun arrests were made over the weekend, saying that it was a 25-year high for the same time period.
Shea said, “It’s good that we got them off the street, but it’s bad that people are carrying them” in the first place, he said. “The mindset of the criminal is that there are no consequences.”
“We hit a 25-year high in gun arrests last week, the most gun arrests we’ve made in a week in 25 years,” said a Fox News article.
De Blasio also mentioned that, “Everything I’m seeing suggests more and more targeted activity by police, more and more police being moved where the need is greatest. The number of gun arrests now at the same level it was last year and in fact, it’s been growing.”
Fox News says Commissioner Shea also noted that 436 gun arrests were made in a 28-day period ending Sept. 6, a sharp uptick from the 320 recorded in the same time period last year. He attributed some the uptick in gun crimes to bail reform and court closures.
