Following a succession of bizarre events and recent personal scandals, Jerry Falwell Jr. says that he’s resigning as president of Liberty University. The decision comes as Falwell Jr. was increasingly being perceived as waffling in his decision to leave the Christian University.
Fox News says that Falwell Jr., who took over the post from his late father in 2007, had been on thin ice following allegations he broke the evangelical university’s code of conduct after posting a picture of himself with a young woman on a yacht whose zipper was undone.
Falwell Jr.’s late father founded the Lynchburg, Va. school with hopes or turning it into the evangelical equivalent of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, according to Fox.
Falwell Jr. did not follow in his father’s footsteps into the ministry.
What’s This All About?
Giancarlo Granda is what this is all about.
In an interview with Reuters, Giancarlo Granda says he was 20 when he met Jerry and Becki Falwell while working as a pool attendant at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel in March 2012.
Starting that month and continuing into 2018, Granda told Reuters that the relationship involved him having sex with Becki Falwell while Jerry Falwell looked on.
“Becki and I developed an intimate relationship and Jerry enjoyed watching from the corner of the room,” said Granda.
Granda, now 29, provided plenty of proof to Reuters to back up his claims, but a lawyer for Jerry Falwell, Michael Bowe, said in response to Reuters’ article, that the evangelical leader “categorically denies everything you indicated you intend to publish about him.”
Again, Granda was able to provide shared emails, text messages and other evidence to illustrate the nature of the relationship.
The article goes on to say that, ‘On Sunday night, however, as Reuters was preparing to publish this article, Jerry Falwell issued a statement to the Washington Examiner in which he said that his wife had had an affair with Granda and that Granda had been trying to extort money from the couple over the matter.
The baffling “resignation” by Falwell went on for a couple of days before a statement from Liberty University.
“On the first day of classes of Liberty University’s fall term, Jerry Falwell, Jr., agreed to resign as its President and from its Board of Directors, but following media reports about the resignation, withdrew it.
he Executive Committee’s Board of Trustees asked Falwell to go on indefinite leave of absence on August 7, to which he agreed. Since that time, additional matters came to light that made it clear that it would not be in the best interest of the University for him to return from leave and serve as President. The Executive Committee met this morning and a conference call gathering of the full Board was planned for tomorrow.
Falwell responded by agreeing to resign immediately as President of Liberty University today but then instructed his attorneys to not tender the letter for immediate resignation. The Executive Committee will go forward with its meeting in the morning followed by the full Board.“
