Former Speaker of the House and Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich predicted that the current Democratic presidential ticket would soon collapse. Gingrich made his remarks on Fox & Friends on Monday according to Fox News.
Gingrich said that the Democratic National Convention, which began on Monday, August 17, 2020, was the beginning of the end for the ticket of former Vice President Joe Biden and California Senator Kamala Harris. Gingrich said, “This will be the high-water mark before the collapse of the Biden-Harris ticket.”
Gingrich cited a recent poll from Rasmussen to support his prediction. “Rasmussen just came out and said 55 percent of the country does not think Biden will complete his first term, which means people are going to be looking at Harris as a president, not a vice president,” Gingrich said. Harris has been criticized by progressive members of her own party for her time as San Francisco District Attorney and California Attorney General. During the Democratic primary debates, Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii attacked Harris’s record, saying Harris, “put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”
The former House Speaker compared the current ticket to the Democratic ticket from 1972. That year the Democrats nominated Senator George McGovern (D-SD) for president. McGovern’s campaign was an unmitigated disaster. Run by young amateurs the campaign was never able to gain any traction against the incumbent Republican president, Richard Nixon. McGovern’s initial choice for vice president, Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton, was dropped from the ticket after it was revealed that Eagleton had undergone electric shock therapy for depression years before.
President Richard Nixon won reelection by a massive landslide, winning every state except Massachusetts and garnering over 60% of the popular vote.
The Rasmussen poll found that 59% of likely voters did not believe that Biden would finish a full term as president if elected, reported the New York Post. Additionally, 39% of likely voters thought it was “very likely” that Biden would not last four years as president. Biden will be 78 years old in January and has been the subject of much speculation about his health and cognitive abilities. A Rasmussen poll taken in late June revealed that almost 40% of voters believe that Biden suffers from some form of dementia. Even among Democratic voters, 20% said they thought Biden had dementia, while almost a third of independents felt that way. The same poll found that 51% of both Democrats and independents felt it was important for Biden to directly address the issue, something he has still not done.
Recent polls have shown some narrowing of the lead Biden has had over Trump. A recent CNN poll had Biden/Harris leading Trump/Pence by only 4 points, which is within the poll’s margin of error.
Gingrich suggested that the Biden/Harris ticket has problems with its public perception. “They just sent out this really pathetic thing from the Biden-Harris campaign headquarters that said these two people are ready to lead from day one and they have this weird picture of Harris and Biden in masks, both of them looking down like they don’t want to fall,” Gingrich said. “It just gives you a flavor of where they’re going.”
