“a good day for our country”Former President Barack Obama
With the announcement of Senator Kamala Harris being picked for his Vice President running-mate, The Biden campaign made history today.
ABC News says that ‘By choosing Harris, who is Black and Indian American, Democrats are sending a powerful and historic statement ahead of the November election as the nation continues to grapple with social change.
In an email to his supporters, Biden said, “If the people of this nation entrust me and Kamala with the office of President and Vice President for the next four years, we’re going to inherit a nation in crisis, a nation divided, and a world in disarray. We won’t have a minute to waste. That’s what led me to Kamala Harris,”
Harris was quick to return the compliment, tweeting, “.@JoeBiden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals.”
Nearly instantaneously after Harris was picked, Fox News reports that the Trump campaign also released a statement from Katrina Pierson, a Trump 2020 senior adviser, that said:
“In her failed attempt at running for president, Kamala Harris gleefully embraced the left’s radical manifesto, calling for trillions of dollars in new taxes and backing Bernie Sanders’ government takeover of health care. She is proof that Joe Biden is an empty shell being filled with the extreme agenda of the radicals on the left.”
NPR added that ‘The Harris pick creates a Democratic ticket that in many ways mirrors the one Biden ran on in 2008 with then-Sen. Barack Obama: An older white man and Washington lifer with deep foreign policy experience is paired with a younger, Black running mate with immigrant roots who has been in the Senate just four years yet still has managed to carve out a national profile. Only this time, Biden is occupying the top spot.’
President Trump posted a tweet from his campaign team that calls Harris a “phony”.
The Star Tribune reports that President Donald Trump says he’s “a little surprised” that his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, has selected Kamala Harris as his running mate.
Trump told reporters at a White House briefing that Harris “was very disrespectful to Joe Biden” during the Democratic primaries, and said “it’s hard to pick somebody that’s that disrespectful.”
Biden/Harris are elected, Harris would become the first woman to serve as vice president, and also the first person of color to be second in command and the highest-elected Asian American in history.
