Twitter, Facebook Delete Video Promoted By Trump On COVID-19 Rx

Breitbart News says that a video posted by them on Facebook has been taken down. The news organization says “Facebook has removed a video posted by Breitbart News earlier today, which was the top-performing Facebook post in the world Monday afternoon, of a press conference in D.C. held by the group America’s Frontline Doctors and organized and sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots.”

At the time of the video’s takedown, it had been viewed more than 17 million times.

The Trump-promoted video was about the use of the drug Hydroxychloroquine and its use in the war on COVID-19. Featured in the video was a group called America’s Frontline Doctors.

The Fox article mentioned that “The New England Journal of Medicine reported in June that a study showed that hydroxychloroquine was no better than placebo pills at preventing illness from the coronavirus. The drug did not seem to cause serious harm, though — about 40% of people administered the drug had side effects, mostly mild stomach problems.”

The video gives the perception that Hydroxychloroquine is essentially a cure for COVID-19, although according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “There are no drugs or other therapeutics presently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent or treat COVID-19.”

The official reasons given for removal of the video from social media sites all ran along the line of “We’ve removed this video for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19,”

CNN reports that in the video, a woman is seen saying, “This virus has a cure, it’s called hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and Zithromax,” the woman claims. “You don’t need masks, there is a cure.”

What is Hydroxychloroquine?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Hydroxychloroquine is an arthritis medicine that also can be used to prevent malaria. It is available in the United States by prescription only.

Nowhere else on its site does the CDC mention anything about Hydroxychloroquine and the possible prevention/treatment of COVID-19.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also cautions against the use of the drug as a COVID-19 treatment. The FDA report cites serious heart rhythm problems and other safety issues, including blood and lymph system disorders, kidney injuries, and liver problems and failure.

Who are America’s Frontline Doctors?

That’s hard to actually say at this time. Their website seems to no longer exist. The leader of the group is Dr. Simone Gold, a Los Angeles-based emergency medicine specialist, according to many new outlets.

Dr. Gold’s bio from her blog states that Simone Gold, MD, JD, FABEM, is a board certified emergency physician. She graduated from Chicago Medical School before attending Stanford University Law School to earn her Juris Doctorate degree.

She has done interviews with several media outlets, and is mostly quoted back in May as saying that there is “no scientific basis that the average American should be concerned” when speaking about COVID-19.
