More violence is being reported in Oregon as Portland protesters clash with feds in overnight riots. This is the 54th night of demonstrations, which federal officials have now declared a riot.
Last night it was moms, dad’s and grandparents who joined the protests. According to Fox News, the groups called the “Wall of Moms” and “PDXDadPod,” left around 9 p.m., and were later captured on social media in front of the justice center, eventually joining a crowd of thousands that reportedly stretched across a whole block.
Although some theories have been tossed about, there’s still no concrete reasoning for the escalating tension so far. The protests from Black Lives Matters groups were mostly peaceful across the US, and people have moved on with their lives. In Portland, it’s just the opposite. Although “BLM” and “racial inequality” is still being thrown out there, that reasoning hasn’t made sense in weeks now.
The New York Times reports, “But some leaders in the Black community, grateful for a reckoning on race, worry that what should be a moment for racial justice could be squandered by violence. Businesses supportive of reforms have been left demoralized by the mayhem the protests have brought. The city’s mayor, Ted Wheeler, despised by many of the protesters, has now been fighting to have federal officers leave them alone.”

Many news outlets feel that the situation will continue onwards, with CNN saying that “Neither side is backing down as protesters and federal agents continue to periodically clash in downtown Portland following an infusion of federal resources in the area,”
NBC News says that video from the scene showed crowds chanting “Feds stay clear, moms are here!” and “Feds go home!” before protesters toppled a fence erected around the federal courthouse. Federal agents fired back with what appeared to be tear gas and flash bangs, the video showed.
The White House says it has enlisted federal agents, including the U.S. Marshals Special Operations Group and an elite U.S. Customs and Border Protection team based on the U.S.-Mexico border, to protect federal property.
The Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) is portraying a different story, as it’s accusing Federal officers of using unmarked vehicles to grab people off the streets.
The report mentions that “Federal law enforcement officers have been using unmarked vehicles to drive around downtown Portland and detain protesters since at least July 14. Personal accounts and multiple videos posted online show the officers driving up to people, detaining individuals with no explanation of why they are being arrested, and driving off.”
The OPB say they have been conducting interviews that allegedly show officers are also detaining people on Portland streets who aren’t near federal property, nor is it clear that all of the people being arrested have engaged in criminal activity. Demonstrators like O’Shea and Pettibone said they think they were targeted by federal officers for simply wearing black clothing in the area of the demonstration.
No matter what, no one seems to want to be perceived as the loser. It’s a shame that no one is being perceived as the winner either. No one seems to be sitting down to discuss anything, which is why so many conflicts happen around the world all the time.
In the case of Portland, the White House is being thought of as bullies just wanting to protect their federal buildings. The protestors are being thought of as a bunch of whiny children being controlled by nefarious forces with another, much more violent agenda planned.
Will this mess ever end?
