An eight-year-old girl was shot dead at a Wendy’s in Atlanta on the Fourth of July, the Associated Press reported. At least two people in a group of armed people opened fire on a vehicle she was a passenger in. The incident occurred at a flash point of Atlanta’s recent protests. The location was the Wendy’s where Rayshard Brooks, an African American, was killed by an Atlanta police officer on June 12. The Wendy’s was on University Avenue off of the I-75/85 exit. The restaurant was burned, and in the wake of the burning the local area has become the scene of erupting protests. Police have identified the victim of the Fourth of July shooting as Secoriea Turner.
USA Today reports that, in addition to Ms. Turner, two other people were killed and over 20 people were injured in shootings across Atlanta on Fourth of July weekend.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports a $10,000 reward has been offered for information on the shooters.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms offered her scorn for the situation.
“You shot and killed a baby,” said Mayor Bottoms, as quoted by Atlanta Journal Council. Bottoms then proceeded to demand those seen carrying long guns in the vicinity of the torched Wendy’s vacate the area.
“If you want to be a part of a solution and not the problem, you need to clear out of that area,” said Bottoms, as she was quoted by Atlanta Journal Council.
In the wake of Secoriea Turner’s death, political commentators gave their opinions regarding what they deemed to be hypocrisy from the Black Lives Matter movement. Secoriea Turner was an African American girl.
“An 8-year-old black girl was shot “multiple times” by BLM inc. rioters outside the Wendy’s where Rayshard Brooks was killed in Atlanta. She’s dead all because some thug stole a cop’s weapon and tried to attack police. Did her life not matter to Black Lives Matter?” said Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, via Twitter.
Criticism also came from Paul Joseph Watson of Summit News,
“July 4 weekend. 8-year-old girl shot dead during BLM protest in Atlanta. 14 shot during street party, 2 dead.
67 shot, 13 fatally in Chicago, including 7-year-old girl shot in the head while stood on sidewalk.Vast majority of perpetrators & victims black. BLM march when?” said Watson via his Twitter.
Likewise, Ryan Fournier, founder and president of Trump Students, shared a video message from the parents of young Ms. Turner.
“This video brought me to tears. This is a message from the parents of 8-year-old Secoriea Turner, who was fatally shot near the same Wendy’s Rayshard Brooks was killed at in Atlanta.
Her life mattered,”
RT!,” said Fournier, sharing the link to the video message via his Twitter.
In the video, Ms. Turner’s father is first to speak,
“They say black lives matter. You killed your own. You killed your own this time. Because of a barrier. They killed my baby because she crossed the barrier and made a U-Turn. You killed a child. She didn’t do nothing to nobody,” said Ms. Turner’s father via the video message.
