Seattle business owners in the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest zone or CHOP zone have filed a lawsuit along with residents against the militarized occupancy of the location. This was reported by Fox News within the last 24 hours. Fox reports that “numerous” Seattle businesses in the area have filed the lawsuit. Seattle was sued on Wednesday. The lawsuit alleged that city officials were “complicit” in the “occupied protest” in the locale.
The class action lawsuit filed as “CHOP Complaint” was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. The Plaintiffs on the lawsuit are listed as follows:
“HUNTERS CAPITAL, LLC, a Washington limited liability company, NORTHWEST LIQUOR AND WINE LLC, a Washington limited liability company, SRJ ENTERPRISES, d/b/a CAR TENDER, a Washington corporation, THE RICHMARK COMPANY d/b/a RICHMARK LABEL, a Washington company, SAGE PHYSICAL THERAPY PLLC, a Washington professional limited liability company, KATHLEEN CAPLES, an individual, ONYX HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION, a Washington registered homeowners association, WADE BILLER, an individual, MADRONA REAL ESTATE SERVICES LLC, a Washington limited liability company, MADRONA REAL ESTATE INVESTORS IV LLC, a Washington limited liability company, MADRONA REAL ESTATE INVESTORS VI LLC, a Washington limited liability company, 12TH AND PIKE ASSOCIATES LLC, a Washington limited liability company, REDSIDE PARTNERS LLC, a Washington limited liability company, MAGDALENA SKY, an individual, OLIVE ST APARTMENTS LLC, a Washington limited liability corporation, and BERGMAN’S LOCK AND KEY SERVICES LLC, a Washington limited liability company, on behalf of themselves and others similarly situated.”
This group of plaintiffs cites constant damages to their properties as the reason for suing the city for CHOP.
“The property owners, businesses, and residents in the area suffer ever-increasing property damage and economic loss every day that CHOP exists in their neighborhood, all because of the City’s active support, encouragement, and endorsement of the occupation. In particular, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has provided the CHOP participants with not just tangible resources, but also a de facto stamp of approval. Her tweets, interviews, and other statements have made it clear that the City is fully aware of what is happening, has no plan or timeline for remedying the ongoing harm, and in fact views the occupation of Capitol Hill as something akin to a perpetual block party,” says the official CHOP complaint.
Residents and businesses were not the exclusive group condemning CHOP. President Donald Trump likewise condemned the occupation. President Trump continues to call for law and order amid a nation spiraling from heated protests sparked by George Floyd’s May 25 murder by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
“When are the thugs, looters, and anarchists moving out of the so-called “Autonomous Zone” in Seattle? Get going!” said Trump, in a tweet that was published at 12:04pm on June 25.
This is not the first time that Mr. Trump has criticized the CHOP. President Trump condemned autonomous zones across the United States and promised the use of force.
“There will never be an “Autonomous Zone” in Washington, D.C., as long as I’m your President. If they try they will be met with serious force!” said Trump in a tweet that was published at 7:45 am on June 23. Mr. Trump’s tweet was censored by the Twitter platform.
President Trump has also denounced the violent rhetoric published by Black Lives Matter’s more aggressive protesters.
“Black Lives Matter leader states, “If the U.S. doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it”. This is Treason, Sedition, Insurrection!” said President Trump in a tweet that was published at 12:29pm on June 25.
