The New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans have officially declared Juneteenth a paid holiday for all employees.
The teams made the collective announcement Wednesday morning, as a sweeping of recognition for the Juneteenth anniversary continues to sweep the country.
Gayle Benson owns both of these franchises, and has recently declared her support for all players and people alike striving to fight for equality and social injustices.
Here’s your history lesson on the subject matter as follows.
Juneteenth will fall on this Friday, and serves as the marker for the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19th 1865, General Gordon Granger declared the Civil War over and all enslaved African Americans to be free, this coming 2 years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
Expect multiple franchises and possibly entire leagues to follow suit in this measure, as the NFL has already sent out a memo to all teams declaring it as such, and NBA teams doing so as well only strengthens the pressure.
