Sushan Singh Rajput has died at the age of 34. Mr.Rajput was known as a rising Bollywood Star. Mr. Rajput appears to have died of suicide. His suicide was initially only suspected and not yet confirmed by officials as of reports early on June 14. It was later confirmed as a suicide by police, as reported by Press Trust of India at 4:15 am on June 14. The news was broken by Shiv Aroor, the senior editor of India Today.
Mr. Rajput had become a household name by playing the character of Manav in the Hindi serial “Pavitra Rishta” citing The News Minute. He was also known for roles in Kai Po Che and MS Dhoni.
Mr. Rajput’s death sent shock waves through India, even attracting the attention of Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India.
“Sushant Singh Rajput…a bright young actor gone too soon. He excelled on TV and in films. His rise in the world of entertainment inspired many and he leaves behind several memorable performances. Shocked by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and fans. Om Shanti,” said Prime Minister Modi in a tweet that was posted at 5:32 am on June 14.
In the wake of his passing, Mr. Rajput’s friend Shekhar Kapur expressed his grief publicly.
“I knew the pain you were going through. I knew the story of the people that let you down so bad that you would weep on my shoulder. I wish I was around the last 6 months. I wish you had reached out to me. What happened to you was their Karma. Not yours. #SushantSinghRajput,” said Mr. Kapur in a tweet that was posted at 2:02 am on June 15.
Rajput’s pain was palpable in the last several months, in that he was decidedly absent from certain fields of former interest. His absence was what was felt. Did it have any direct relationship to depression? This is unclear.
Mr. Rajput fell off of Twitter at the end of last year. While he had an active Twitter following, with 1.9M followers, he had not posted any new tweets since December 2019.
“Right from exploring the local tourist attractions to experiencing the culture from a closer lens, it was just perfect! And what made it better was to get upto 5% cashback every-time I swiped my @mastercardindia @icicibank
Mr. Rajput’s pain was also felt in the longing he expressed for his mother, who died in 2002 when he was still a teenager. This longing was expressed publicly as it was reported by NDTV out of New Delhi when Mr. Rajput shared an emotional tribute to his mother publicly. The tribute included a photo collage of his late mother. Mr. Rajput’s post regarding his late mother was posted via his Instagram, which he appears to have been more active on in his last days.
