Former Heisman trophy finalist and number 2 overall pick Ryan Leaf has been arrested on domestic battery and misdemeanor charges, per numerous media sources.
Leaf was arrested in Palm Desert, California, taken into the Larry D. Smith correctional facility of the Riverside County Sheriff’s department, and later released Friday evening on $5,000 bail with the court date set for September 25th.
Ryan has dealt with alcoholism and drug issues throughout his adult life, and formerly spent 2 years in prison after having broken into a house in his home state of Montana to steal some prescription medication.
Needless to say his time in the NFL was lackluster at best as he failed to live up to expectations with the San Diego Chargers after having been picked 2nd overall and being the star he was in college.
Leaf had since turned his life around and even become an analyst with ESPN, also having worked with the PAC-12 Network last season and even co-hosting a show on SiriusXM’s PAC-12 channel too.
What these charges stem from seems to be unknown at the moment, and so it is far too early to make any judgements about Leaf’s condition or innocence.
