The sports media world is very thankful for The Last Dance Michael Jordan documentary, since it’s given us something to milk every bit of content from in light of the fact that we’ve hardly had any sports for the last two months.
Now that the last leg of the documentary has aired, we’ve now moved to the stage where we make somewhat reckless comparisons and hypotheticals just because we can, and i mean hey, why not?
The latest of this is the topic of comparing Patrick Mahomes to Michael Jordan, as if it’s reasonable to compare an NBA and an NFL players on the field skill set.
Nate Burleson recently said he saw Mahomes as more of a LeBron James type due to his passing prowess and vision, which is…kind of odd, because wouldn’t that theoretically make all quarterbacks similar to LeBron or any basketball player known for their passing?
Someone could be an elite NBA passer, but how would LeBron fair as an NFL QB over the course of a season? Tyreek Hill can be the fastest in the league at his position, but how would he fair as a point guard for a full season? Would that speed really translate to meaningful stats and coast to coast finishes? It’s doubtful.
It’s entirely sensible to compare two people with different professions mindset on their job, but to compare their traits is questionable.
So, does Mahomes have the same mentality as MJ then? I mean, he certainly seems more amicable than Jordan, but then again his clutch performance could be likened to Michaels, couldn’t it?
There are so many layers to comparing personalities and if they’re similar or not that when you really get into the intricacies of it, i can’t help but say what are we even asking? This is an unanswerable question.
Nonetheless, it makes for a fun harmless discussion.
