Above, from the Obama foundation YouTube, Obama criticizes Trump’s adminstration for poor COVID-19 response
U.S. President Emeritus Barack Obama used the platform of a virtual graduation commencement ceremony to criticize the Trump administration’s COVID-19 response. This was reported by The Guardian within the last 24 hours. The event was for HBCUs “this afternoon” segment.
“More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing. A lot of them aren’t even pretending to be in charge,” said Obama, as quoted by The Guardian.
The Guardian live blog recorded at 18:19 on May 17 that Obama had given a “rare rebuke” for his successor. It is considered both uncommon and unconventional for a former president to speak out against a current president.
“Let’s be honest, a disease like this just spotlights the underlying inequalities and extra burdens that black communities have historically had to deal with in this country. We see it in the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on our communities,” said Obama, as further quoted by The Guardian.
The speech which rebuked the Trump administration’s pandemic management amid the first of two commencement speech virtual events Obama was scheduled for on Saturday.
The New York Times made note that Obama completely disregarded the current administration stating that the country “lacks leadership” when it comes to COVID-19.
Despite strong criticism from his predecessor in office, current President Donald Trump takes no pause in praising current COVID-19 response.
“The number of Coronavirus cases is strongly trending downward throughout the United States, with few exceptions. Very good news, indeed!” said Trump via a tweet that posted on May 17 at 5:56pm.
Trump also more recently paused to praise Peter Navarro, the White House trade adviser, who recently spoke to George Stephanopoulous on ABC’s This Week. Navarro had corrected some of Stephanopoulous’ on-air comments and this drew praise from the president.
“Great job Peter!,” said Trump via his Twitter, sharing a post from Nicholas Fondacaro, a news analyst from Newsbusters.
“On @ABC‘s #ThisWeek, @GStephanopoulos gets SCHOOLED by White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on the administration’s early #COVID response https://newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/nicho,” said Fondacaro via twitter, in the initial post that Trump shared and captioned. Fondacaro, in addition to the Newsbusters, is also a news analyst for the Media Research Center.
Trump also spent the hours that followed Obama’s public rebuke seeking ways to come after him with legal investigations. Trump shared a multitude of tweets from right-wing influencers regarding the fully alleged corruptions of the Obama administration. He shared tweets from Kambree TV and Dan Bongino regarding the trending #Obamagate. Obamagate is a public term for the investigation into Obama’s alleged meddling with the traditional system of the presidential election candidacy. Trump also took to Twitter to promote content that he approves of.
“Watch @marklevinshow tonight on @FoxNews. He covers the Russia Hoax and all of the other criminality that came from the Obama Administration They got caught! A repeat later in evening. Really something,” said Trump in a tweet that posted on May 17 at 7:38pm.
