As the impeachment hearings wear on, NBC News reports that Mitch McConnell has struck down the third amendment for subpoena of OMB documents. This happened within the last hour. In response, Schumer introduced the fourth amendment to subpoena acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.
In the meantime, the Senators will take a 30-minute recess to eat dinner. Both sides will have pizza. The Republicans will eat Ledo’s pizza in the Senate’s Mansfield room. This is where they usually hold their policy luncheons. The Democrats will eat Ledo’s pizza in the cloakroom. It appears that the pizza order is the only thing the two sides have agreed upon today.
During dinner, both sides will discuss what must happen next. After this, they will debate for two hours the Mulvaney amendment. There will then be another vote whether or not to kill the amendment.
Four of the impeachment managers paused to speak with CBS News as the trial proceedings continue. They are Adam Schiff, Val Demings, Zoe Longfren, and Jason Crow. They spoke with CBS News Anchor Norah O’Donnell within the last hour. The interview is available here.
Schiff states that some intelligence agencies have “stopped cooperating” with the investigation on “the possible instruction of others.” He has not given specific citations for the claim regarding these others.
Amy Klobuchar meanwhile made these comments,
“I’m someone that always keeps looking at my colleagues to see if they look guilty. And some of them are kind of looking down. I don’t know how they can deny all witnesses, and let’s see what they do after a few days of this.” As quoted by CBS News.
After the dinner recess, the Democrats returned to push the Senate for the Mulvaney witness, citing The New York Times. The continued push for his testimony has some wondering if any Republicans will finally agree with the amendments and ask for his witness as well. The Democrats have a great interest in Mulvaney because of his “proximity” to Mr. Trump.
Within the last hour, NBC reporter Julie Tsirkin posted that Trump is being continuously updated on the proceedings of his trial. Trump is currently overseas in Switzerland attending the World Economic Forum.
Eric Ueland, a member of President Trump’s legal team, has been informing reporters of the communications passed to Trump. Ueland is quoted as stating the following,
“(Trump )is being constantly updated and is very impressed by what is going on here.”
“I think as always we have a very good infrastructure to communicate directly with the President and senior leadership team while they’re over in Davos, the ins and outs of what’s going on here in the Senate floor.”
Within the last hour, the Guardian reports that Hakeem Jeffries, one of the House impeachment managers, is now making “the case to subpoena Mick Mulvaney.” This congressman from New York has stated that Donald Trump has made Richard Nixon look like a “choir boy.”
Jeffries also said,
“Evidence matters. And the truth matters.”
