According to Fox17, a Gallup poll published on Monday found that current President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama are 2019’s most admired men. The annual poll had asked their respondents who were their most admired man and woman of the year was, both of them secured 18% of the vote. When respondents were asked “What man that you have heard or read about, living today in any part of the world, do you admire most?” As for which woman was most admired in 2019, former first lady Michelle Obama received the nod with 10%. Current first lady Melania Trump received 5% of the vote. This is the second year Michelle Obama has received the majority of the vote as most admired woman. Hillary Clinton had received the nod the previous 22 years. The party divide among the respondents tally was also noted, with 41% of Democrats choosing Obama and 45% choosing Trump.
According to Business Insider, Obama has held the spot of most-admired American man for 12 years in a row, including after leaving office in 2017. Likely due to their high visibility and name recognition, presidents and first ladies have dominated the most admired man and woman rankings. Former presidents make up seven of the 10 men with the most top 10 finishes in the most-admired rankings, and former first ladies make up five of the 10 women with the most top 10 finishes in the poll. The late evangelical pastor Billy Graham has finished in the top 10 most admired men 61 times, and the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II is the woman with the most top-10 finishes, placing in the top ten 51 times.
Now President Donald Trump is admired now more than his previous two years in office. He finishes this year with a 45 percent approval rating. Trump has occasionally compared himself to Obama, criticizing his predecessor and vowing to undo many of the former president’s signature policy achievements. While the president remains deeply unpopular with Democrats with Obama remaining highly popular he has also maintained solid support from Republican voters. The poll shows 44.3 % approve of Trump, the remaining 52% disapproving of him. For the second year in a row, Obama has outranked Bill Clinton who finished 22 times for over 25 years. Only other President to share this popularity in the poll was Dwight D Eisenhower who won twice after leaving office in the late 1950s.
The rest of the top 10 included former President Jimmy Carter, Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Pope Francis, presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Adam Schiff, the Dalai Lama, and investor Warren Buffet. The results show that Queen Elizabeth finished in the top 10 for the 51st time. It came as a surprise to a lot of people that sitting President Donald Trump’s approval rating of 45% was the highest he’s ever gotten throughout his tenure as President of the United States.
