Christopher Nolan has released the first trailer for his newest film ‘Tenet’, a time-twisting, action packed thriller about the prevention of World War III.
The film will star actors such as John David Washington (BlacKkKlansmen), Elizabeth Debecki (Widows) and Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse), who will soon take on the role of “The Batman” from Nolan’s former superhero franchise. In addition to this, Michael Caine, a frequent collaborator of Nolan’s, will also star in the film.
The trailer opens with shots of skyscrapers and clips giving insight into Washington’s character, a special agent who dies and is brought back to life. When he awakes he has become a part of a group attempting to prevent World War III, which, is described as worse than a nuclear holocaust. The only clue he’s given on how to do so is a single word ― “Tenet.”
Nolan, director of films like “Dunkirk” and “The Dark Knight Rises” seems to be playing with themes such as time and different versions of reality, similar to some of his older works like “Inception” and “Memento.”
By the end of the trailer we really see Nolan playing with the sequence of time, with clips of boats and car chases played in reverse. We then discover Washington’s character has the ability to anticipate events that have yet to occur.
According to The Verge, in addition to this trailer, Warner Brothers is also releasing a longer prologue for the film which will be played before the new “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” in select IMAX theaters.
Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2020. Check out the trailer below.
