Chris Daughtry won second place in the Masked Singer competition. He was beaten by the masked fox Wayne Brady, who also took the title from the Real host Adrienne Bailon.
Daughtry spoke with Q13 this morning regarding his second-place win. Even though he lost out to Brady, Daughtry isn’t losing much sleep. He said:
“I feel incredible. I’m so happy to be able to talk about this right now. It’s been months of lies, “ Daughtry went on air in a live Q13 interview.
Daughtry performed as the Rottweiler in all of his Masked Singer appearances. Citing Entertainment Weekly, Daughtry was just pleased not to have come in fourth place. He previously performed on American Idol, and so, his expectations of his singing contest show performance may have been higher than most.
Daughtry had to wear a heavy, hot costume as the Rottweiler character. He said to Entertainment Weekly, “Yeah, the jeans and sneakers made it a lot easier. It was very constricting, very heavy, very hot. There was not one performance where I didn’t get winded and feel like I was gasping for my life.”
Even though the costume was so heavy and cumbersome, Daughtry felt that it was the best costume available for him. He had searched through an entire collection of costumes before it stood out.
Chris Daughtry was an easy sell for this show. He saw the Korean version of it featuring Ryan Reynolds. He jumped on the opportunity when he realized it was released in America.
Citing Billboard, Daughtry in the wake of his second-place win has released a video for his Alive by Sia cover. “Alive” was the song he chose because of the experience on The Masked Singer made him feel exhilarated and alive.
“I saved those kinds of songs, ‘Alive’ toward the end because at that point it didn’t matter,” he told Billboard.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of her songwriting, and that song summed up my entire experience because I felt so alive in that costume in such a weird way and so present in a way that I’ve never really seen before onstage.”
The show’s winner Wayne Brady, who performed as the Fox, is a comedian and a TV personality. He’s known for his role in Kinky Boots. He is quoted by UPI as saying,
“This has been the coolest, most amazing, most touching, most challenging, weirdest (experience). He also hosts Let’s Make a Deal.
Other celebrities to appear on the show include Adrienne Balton, Patti LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Seal, Laila Ali, Paul Shaffer, Dr. Drew Pinsky, Sherri Shepherd, Raven-Symone, Johnny Weir, Kelly Osbourne, and Ana Gasteyer.
The show was hosted by Nick Cannon, and Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger all served as judges.
Citing TV Guide, Daughtry and the other contestants had no idea who each other was until the whole show was over. As he said, quoted by TV Guide:
“I did not! I had no idea who any of them were until everybody else knew. We were covered at all times and we weren’t allowed to speak to anyone unless they had on a sweater that said ‘Talk to me’. We never really knew who we were dealing with. I would hear people warming up and couldn’t figure it out. I was floored when I figured out that Patti was up against me all that time. It was pretty surreal,”
