Peloton bikes have made headlines this week over a controversial ad featuring Monica Ruiz. Citing Los Angeles Times, the actress blames her face for the spark this commercial caused. The actress has a sort of cringe throughout the rigorous exercise routines the commercial covered. The Peloton commercial was a holiday spot for the brand’s stationary bikes.
This is the reason for the controversy surrounding the ad. Many people feel that the ad sends harmful messages about body consciousness, fitness regimens, and so on. Some also felt it was quote “creepy” and “sexist” that the male partner of the female character in the commercial gifted her with exercise equipment, stating that a man “has no business trying to steer his partner’s exercise habits.”
The Peloton company has suffered significant backlash and losses from this ad spot. They have lost some $1BN in revenues as the controversy escalated. Yet, the company stands by this ad. They have stated that the bike can change lives “meaningfully and positively”. Citing NBC News, the company stated, “While we’re disappointed in how some have misinterpreted this commercial, we are encouraged by and grateful for-the outpouring of support.”
Monica Ruiz even followed-up with an ad spot done for Aviation gin, owned by Ryan Reynolds. In this ad, she pokes fun at the controversy her other ad sparked saying “to new beginnings” to the other female characters drinking Aviation gin alongside her character.
Ruiz spoke with NBC News in an exclusive interview about the controversy. She has stated that this commercial has been available for 3 weeks now. There was no controversy in the beginning. It was only her friends and family who made comments regarding the commercial. Then, as the ad started to circulate on social media, it became a hair split of divisive views on the topic. There was one camp who felt that the whole thing was a bit silly. Then there were those who were mortally offended by it.
Ryan Reynolds, spoke with NBC during the same interview in which they spoke with Monica Ruiz. He stated that he and his creative team were discussing the commercials backlash when they saw it go viral on social media. Reynolds made the joke that they should send Ms. Ruiz a “year’s supply of gin.” From there came the idea to poke some innocent fun at the commercial, to embrace the culture that runs between social networks these days.
“Everything is sort of divisive these days. It’s like one camp here, one camp there,” said Reynolds.
“We had this thought that we could do this ad without contributing to that divide, without vilifying anybody. Just sort of commenting on this person, well the person and the actress in the ad. For us it just seemed like a no-brainer.” Reynolds jumped on the idea in what was a genius stroke of marketing for Aviation gin.
