Only Charlie Strong’s 3rd season at South Florida, previously coaching at the Uiversity of Texas and Louisville. The University’s athletic department thought it would be best to let Coach Strong go after his team went a disappointing 4-8.
A quote from Michael Kelly, the Vice President of Athletics at South Florida about the firing from UPI.com
“I would like to thank coach Strong and his staff for their hard work and contributions to our program. I have tremendous respect for coach Strong and his dedication to recruiting and developing young men of talent and character and leading them with integrity. “
Charlie Strong coaching career started off very strong with an impressive 10-2 record back in 2017. That 1st year, Coach Strong had a phenom quarterback Quinton Flowers at the wheel leading the team. Flowers has the school record for most passing touchdowns in school history with 71 according to this source. Quinton played briefly in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals as a running back.
In 2018, Coach Strong led the Bulls to 7 straight wins, looking like USF had made the correct choice in hiring Charlie Strong after Willie Taggart had left to FSU. But after losing his next 6 games, including their bowl game, USF started to have doubt.
Willie Taggart has been rumored to be on the radar once again by USF said by the Joey Knight of Tampabay.com.
Giving Coach Strong another crack at the head coach position, USF was hoping for a season like 2017, when the team did so well only losing 2 games.
Starting off the 2019 season, USF lost their first 2 games to really good programs, 19th ranked Wisconsin and Georgia Tech. I don’t believe anyone was expecting them to win those games, so those games were not the issue. The losses that brought issues were to programs like, SMU, NAVY. Temple and rival UCF. With no good wins on Coach’s Strongs resume this season.
These were not just losses, these were losses by huge margins. Only one game the USF Bulls lost by less than 10 points. Most of the games were over 20 point margins. The expectation from the USF Athletic Department did not match the results from the current USF team. A quote from South Florida President.
“We are committed to excellence across all aspects of the university, including USF athletics. I am confident that our search will result in a new head coach who will lead our student-athletes to great achievements on and off the field.”
Having the title of “Head Coach” can be cruel, even if Coach Strong did have a winning record over his 3 years. It is NEVER about what you did in the past, but what you are doing now. Currently now, Coach Strong only won 4 games and that is why he was let go. Goof luck to him in the future
