After her Snapchat was seemingly hacked, nude photos of Demi Lovatohave allegedly been leaked online, making her the latest celebrity to be the victim of an awful invasion of privacy. According to The Blast, a strange message showed up on Demi’s Snapchat telling viewers to go to a different platform where they could reportedly see nude photos of her.
As a reminder, it’s never OK to share nude or private photos of anyone without their consent. In situations like these, it’s also not OK to search for or view the alleged leaked photos. Because they were apparently shared without Demi’s consent, viewing them is a further invasion of privacy that Demi does not deserve. In fact, many of Demi’s fans have taken to Twitter to say just that.
“DEMI LOVATO DESERVES RESPECT,” one user Tweeted repeatedly.
“Disrespecting someone is one thing but disrespecting a woman’s body is another thing and completely violating and disgusting. When will the world stop breaking demi down and just support her?” another person wrote. Others on Twitter have pointed out that Demi Lovato has long been an advocate for mental health, being open about her own and supporting others in their journeys. That’s why some fans have noted it’s particularly important to support Demi after something like this has happened.
Of course, taking nude photos is completely normal and the body isn’t something to be ashamed of. But when those photos are distributed in ways the person in them didn’t intend for, or when they are viewed without consent, that can feel like a major violation of privacy. That is something no one deserves to feel. Everyone has the right to show off their body if and when they choose, but it’s exactly that: a choice. Taking that choice away from someone is not only unfair and hurtful, it can also be illegal.
As Jennifer Lawrence said when her photos were leaked in 2014, “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime.” That’s the whole point — while people tend to view nude photos leaking as a salacious event that could damage a person’s reputation, it’s not that all. Instead, it’s using the likeness of someone’s body without their consent, which is a violation. While laws aren’t consistent, most states now have revenge porn laws on the books.
Demi has not addressed the alleged leak, but her team reportedly had the images removed and has regained control of her Snapchat account.
Rather than focus on this invasion of privacy, we can shift our gaze to a time that Demi sent an empowering message about her body — one she was completely in control of. In September, Demi posted a photo of herself in a bikini to Instagram, letting her fans know that she’s tired of feeling shame when it comes to her body.
“I’m just literally sooooo tired of being ashamed of my body, editing it (yes the other bikini pics were edited – and I hate that I did that but it’s the truth) so that others think I’m THEIR idea of what beautiful is, but it’s just not me,” Demi wrote. “This is what I got. I want this new chapter in my life to be about being authentic to who I am rather than trying to meet someone else’s standards. So here’s me, unashamed, unafraid and proud to own a body that has fought through so much.”
